Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock’s heated DRS clash goes viral after Pink ODI victory

While it was an emphatic performance from the Proteas as they defeated Australia in the Pink ODI at the Wanderers on Sunday, an on-field disagreement between skipper Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has stolen the spotlight on X.

In a clip shared by @Intengu_drongo that is rapidly approaching 900,000 views, Bavuma signalled to the umpire at the bowler’s end to review a “not out” LBW decision against Xavier Bartlett, who was on a fiery 50 off 28 balls.

At that stage, Australia were 322/8, needing another 43 runs off 14 deliveries. With Bartlett operating at a strike rate of 178 during his aggressive knock, the visitors were still well within striking distance.

De Kock, however, made his thoughts known in typically animated fashion, signalling through heated body language that he felt the on-field umpire’s call was spot-on and a review was unnecessary.

Ultimately, Bavuma’s call to challenge the decision proved masterly. The review was successful, Lizaad Williams picked up the key wicket, and the contest was effectively put to rest as Australia’s last set batsman trudged back to the pavilion.

The central talking point, however, remains the tense exchange between Bavuma and De Kock, where the gloveman appeared openly dismissive of his captain’s judgment. Bavuma held his ground, overriding his passionate teammate with a firm—and expletive-laden—call to go upstairs.

The incident has thoroughly divided fans on social media, with many calling out De Kock’s conduct as inappropriate for a senior player—a look made all the more glaring by the fact that his assessment was incorrect.

In fairness to the keeper, a similar dynamic had played out just minutes earlier. On that occasion, Bavuma backed bowler Keshav Maharaj’s plea to review a decision despite De Kock’s vocal objections—and that review came back unsuccessful.

That prior misstep undoubtedly fuelled the frustration leading into the viral moment, leaving the keeper feeling justified in challenging his skipper’s instinct.

While it was undeniably a high-stress exchange given the context of a game that was still hanging in the balance, fans and pundits alike will continue to debate whether De Kock crossed the line or if it was simply heat-of-the-moment intensity.
