As South African football continues to rise prominently on the international stage, one name increasingly resonating with hope and aspiration is Orlando Pirates fan favourite Relebohile Mofokeng.

His dazzling skills and unwavering determination have cemented his place in the hearts of Orlando Pirates supporters and earned him respect and admiration from football enthusiasts in South Africa.

The 23-year-old football prodigy, whose talent has not gone unnoticed by fans and scouts alike, is determined to carve out a legacy in a sport where dreams are often pursued at breakneck speed. Yet, amidst the inflating pressures of the game, Mofokeng retains a refreshing perspective: a commitment to remembering his roots.

Born and raised in Soweto, Mofokeng’s early life was steeped in the rich football culture that characterises the area. In his formative years, he spent kicking balls on dusty streets, surrounded by locals who treated every game as a crucial part of the community’s fabric.

This upbringing has shaped his playing style and instilled an unwavering sense of responsibility to uplift and inspire others from similar backgrounds.

Adidas, the German multinational corporation that manufactures footwear, apparel, and accessories, features Mofokeng in the latest episode of their campaign, ‘Plus One Effect’. The six-part series explores the stories of athletes and the vital role of their ‘Plus Ones’, the supporters who shaped their journeys from the sidelines.

In this episode, Adidas shines the spotlight on Mofokeng’s journey, which began in the streets of Soweto, where football wasn’t just a pastime – for him, it was a way of life.

From his backyard to the school fields, from Kasi tournaments to packed stadiums, Mofokeng has always had a ball at his feet and a dream in his heart with the unwavering support from his parents, Naomi and Sechaba.

“Having both my parents by my side is a privilege,” said Mofokeng. “They motivate and encourage me, and they have always believed in me, through the wins and the losses. I want to make them proud, because they have always been there for me, and I will always be there for them.”

Mofokeng’s mother, Naomi, has been his anchor, motivating, grounding, and guiding him with quiet strength. That bond, built on mutual respect and unwavering love, fuels his fire to succeed.

“The hardest decision I ever made was sending Rele to a boarding school when he was 13 years old,” said Naomi.

“He could’ve stayed in our kasi and gone to a local school, but I knew the right opportunities were further away. I could only see him once a month for five years. It broke me, but it is a sacrifice I had to make so he could have a better future.”

Now, as he chases greatness, Mofokeng stays grounded by remembering his roots. As his mother, Naomi, said, “When you know where you come from, you know where you’re going,” said Mofokeng.

“I want a better future for myself and my family.”

Mofokeng has emerged as a standout athlete, and every time he is on the pitch, he infuses his play with passion and determination, embodying the spirit of a true competitor.

“Every time I step onto the field, I carry the weight of my country on my shoulders,” said Mofokeng. “My hunger to perform at my best fuels me. It’s about more than just winning; it’s about making my mark and inspiring others.”

Mofokeng’s journey is not just a personal triumph, it has become a symbol of hope and excellence in his community, showcasing that hard work and perseverance can lead to great achievements.
