The search is on once again for South Africa’s junior best baker as “The Taste Master Junior” returns for its highly anticipated second season.
With twelve enthusiastic teenagers battling it out in the kitchen, the stakes are high for them to not only claim the title but also secure the coveted bragging rights that accompany it.
Last season, Cape Town’s own fourteen-year-old Jahzara Ranjith emerged victorious, crowning her the nation’s first-ever “Taste Master Junior” champion.
Ranjith outperformed her eager rivals, Afton Mathys from the Mother City and second runner-up Tineke Louw, a talented 16-year-old from Paarl, in a competition filled with flair and creativity.
This season, which spans twelve exciting weeks of culinary invention, will once again be overseen by the discerning palates of judges Zola Nene and Fritz Schoon.
The judges are excited to discover the talents and eclectic flavours that the new contestants bring.
This season’s contestants are Leandri Joubert, Rorisang Moloi, Sarah Flowers, Kimberly Porter and Matthew Harvey.
Kodi Bertish, Arona Vster, Tshenolo Chimuka, Isaiah Jaganathan, Joy Nxumalo, Aphiwe Sithole and Tyler Robinson round it off.
As the first episode kicked off last night (October 7), Bertish and Sithole served up the winning dish in the season’s inaugural challenge, setting a high standard for the weeks to follow.
The challenge was to create heritage bites with a tasty twists.
Celebrity chef, author and television personality, Nene is one of South Africa’s most loved culinary voices.
She said: “I am so excited to be back as a judge on ‘The Taste Master Junior’. These young contestants remind us that food is about joy, curiosity and sharing, and I cannot wait to encourage them as they find their voices through food.”
Meanwhile, Schoon, who is a baker, entrepreneur and food visionary, shared: “It is an incredible honour to be part of a platform that inspires young culinary talent.
“My focus here is not just to judge the final product, but to instil in these juniors the discipline of quality and the courage to find their unique creative voice. The passion they bring to the kitchen today is the foundation of South Africa’s food culture tomorrow.”
