Tragedy struck the West Coast Air Show in Saldanha today when an Impala jet crashed in flames before more than 2000 spectators, abruptly ending the event.
Details regarding the pilot’s survival are currently unconfirmed, but initial indications suggest a fatal outcome.
The West Coast Saldanha Bay Air Show commenced on Friday, March 21. Organizers previously noted on Facebook that confirming the daily lineup was challenging due to the coastal location.
They explained that the area’s unique weather conditions, including sea fog and sudden wind gusts, make it difficult to finalize a schedule in advance. The proximity to the sea means the skies can change rapidly.
According to the post, Rickus Erasmus and his team from Air Show South Africa (ASSA) made the initial decision on the flight program at 7:00 a.m. during the mandatory pilot safety briefing.
The program was adjusted throughout the day based on weather changes, aircraft performance, and the safety of pilots and spectators.
IOL has contacted the organizers for an official statement on the details of the crash.
This is a developing story.
