Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has revealed the “crazy” text message from Kourtney Kardashian that transformed their long-standing friendship into a romantic relationship.
The musician, who had been friends with the reality television star for years before they became a couple, recalled how Kardashian made her feelings clear in 2021, leaving him stunned and unsure of how to respond.
Speaking to The Times, Barker said the message caught him completely off guard.
“[She sent me] something crazy … I was like: ‘What?’ I had to look at my phone four times. I thought, there’s no way! I’d left any thoughts of us ever being anything more,” he said.
Barker explained that the exchange began after he offered a mutual male friend advice about dating.
He recalled telling the friend to enjoy dating without becoming emotionally invested in everyone he met.
“And then Kourtney texted something like: ‘Why don’t you teach me how to find my bearings?’ I’m like: ‘Oh my gosh’,” Barker said.
The message left him feeling nervous about the possibility of a relationship with Kardashian.
“And I was scared because I thought, I can’t mess this up, I can’t mess this up,” he added.
The couple married in 2022 and welcomed their son, Rocky, in 2023.
Despite their years of friendship, Barker admitted that he had been comfortable keeping their relationship platonic because they were so different.
“I mean, even when we first met, I was obviously tattooed from head to toe and in a band. I think that’s why I felt so comfortable being Kourtney’s friend because we were such opposites,” he said.
He added: “I was like: ‘Oh, I can think she’s cute or attractive or a great mom because we’re so different’.”
Barker also revealed that he prefers Kardashian to remain without tattoos, despite his own heavily inked appearance.
“My wife doesn’t have any tattoos and I don’t want her to. I love that I’m tattooed from head to toe and she’s just beautiful and clean,” he told the publication.
The revelations come after Barker disclosed that he had undergone surgery after experiencing numbness in his arm, hand and fingers since performing at a show in September.
The drummer shared a photograph of Kardashian smiling beside him as he lay in a hospital bed wearing a blue gown and surgical cap.
In the accompanying caption, he explained that he had undergone a nerve test following a show and was advised that he needed a cubital tunnel release procedure.
“I had surgery yesterday. My arm, hand and fingers have been numb since a show I played last month.
“I did a nerve test Monday after my show and turns out I needed a cubital tunnel release to fix the nerve,” he wrote.
According to OrthoInfo, cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes compressed at the elbow. Symptoms typically include numbness in the little finger and, sometimes, the ring finger.
Barker said he wanted to address the problem promptly so that he could continue performing.
“I wanted to get ahead of it and get it over with so that I can keep playing the way I play for a long long time. Should be good in a few weeks,” he added.
