The entertainment industry is mourning the passing of legendary actress, Cynthia Philisiwe Shange.

The actress’s daughter, Nonhle Thema announced Shange’s passing on Monday morning, April 20.

“With a heavy heart, I share the news of our Dear Mother, please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time,” she wrote alongside a short tribute, celebrating Shange’s life.

Before her acting career, Shange made history as a trailblazing beauty queen.

In 1972, she became the first Black woman to represent South Africa at the international Miss World competition.

She also achieved the historic milestone of being the first Black woman to win the local title before the pageant was fully integrated.

Shange later transitioned to the screen, starring in several popular TV shows and landing the lead role in the hit series “Udeliwe”.

She also appeared in the iconic “Shaka Zulu” miniseries and later joined the cast of the long-running soapie “Muvhango”.

Her family released a statement confirming she passed away early Monday morning at a KwaZulu-Natal hospital.

“With profound sadness, the family of Cynthia Shange shares the news of her passing at the age of 76. Shange, a legendary figure in South African arts and culture, left an indelible mark as both a beauty queen and revered actress.

“She passed away in the early hours of today in a hospital in Kwazulu-Natal after facing illness,” the family wrote.

Shange is survived by her daughters Sihle and Nonhle, sons Ayanda and Benele Thema, as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to honour her legacy,” the family statement read.

Funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.

Heartfelt condolences and tributes poured in across social media for the family.

“My deepest condolences. May His Spirit grant you peace and comfort at this time,” wrote Mzansi singer, Loyiso Bala.

“Sending sincere condolences angel,” wrote media mogul and businesswoman Carol Bouwer,

“Condolences to you and family sis. Modimo a nne le lona (May God be with you),” commented @palesamad.
