Two motorists were killed, while four passengers, including a minor, were injured in a horrific crash involving two SUVs in Springs, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday night.
The accident occurred at 6.17pm on Wit Road near the N17 freeway in Selection Park.
Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said both drivers were adult men driving SUVs.
They suffered fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
Ntladi said rescue teams from the Selection Park Fire Station responded promptly to render the necessary life-preservation services.
“On arrival, it was discovered that both drivers of the two SUVs were still trapped behind the steering wheels of their vehicles.
A devastating collision involving two SUVs claimed the lives of two drivers and left four passengers injured on Wit Road in Springs.
“The rescue team had to use specialised hydraulic rescue equipment (Jaws-of-Life) to access, free and recover the entrapped patients and deceased drivers from two wrecks.”
He said the four injured passengers from the second SUV, believed to be members of the same family, were treated at the scene and transported to a nearby medical facility.
According to Ntladi, the entire road had to be temporarily closed for the duration of the rescue operation.
He said that after the rescue operation, the scene was handed over to the city’s metropolitan department.
“The incident was handed over to City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department officers for on-scene investigations, removal of the deceased to a pathological facility and road rehabilitation due to oil spillage and debris from the crashed vehicles.”
Meanwhile, over the weekend, IOL reported that a devastating single-vehicle crash at the interchange between the Soweto Highway and the N17 in Orlando, Soweto, claimed the lives of three men on Sunday morning, while a fourth occupant was injured.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the accident occurred when a Peugeot carrying four occupants lost control, crashed and rolled down the embankment linking the Soweto Highway and the N17.
JMPD officers, together with Emergency Medical Services (EMS), responded swiftly to the scene following reports of the crash.
Despite their efforts, three male occupants sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The surviving occupant suffered injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said: “The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) expresses its deepest condolences following a tragic single-vehicle accident that occurred earlier this morning at the interchange of the Soweto Highway and the N17 in Orlando, Soweto.”
The cause of the crash has not yet been established and will form part of an official investigation.
Fihla confirmed that: “A case of culpable homicide will be opened at the Orlando South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.”
