A teacher injured during a shooting at Ntabankulu Primary School in the Eastern Cape has died in hospital, bringing the number of educators killed in the attack to two.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the incident occurred at approximately 12:pm when a former teacher at the school allegedly forced his way onto the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence.
Three female teachers were shot during the attack, two died from their injuries, while the third remains in critical condition in hospital.
Gantana said the suspect, a male former teacher at the school, died at the scene after turning the firearm on himself.
“The suspect had been dismissed from the school in 2023 following sexual assault charges and was out on bail at the time of the shooting,” said Gantana.
SAPS confirmed that the case is being investigated under two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and an inquest docket relating to the suspect’s death.
The investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the attack is ongoing.
Acting provincial police commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, condemned the attack and extended condolences to those affected.
“The SAPS wishes to extend condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased educator. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims, and we wish them a full recovery. We condemn this violent act in the strongest terms,” she said.
