A 17-year-old boy was stabbed in the back after a friendly rugby match at a school in Bredasdorp in the Western Cape on Saturday.

The provincial police spokesperson, Constable Ndakhe Gwala, said a case of attempted murder had been opened. Initially, Gwala said the victim was 15 years old, but this was later rectified.

“A 17-year-old boy sustained stab wounds on his back and is currently receiving medical treatment,” Gwala told IOL.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrest has been effected at this stage.”

The match was between Hoërskool Bredasdorp and Hoërskool Punt in Mossel Bay, whose teams meet annually.

Hoërskool Bredasdorp said in a post on its Facebook page that the boy had been stabbed on its school grounds by a child who was not one of its learners.

“A child who is not attached to Bredasdorp stabbed a boy from Punt with an object on our school grounds,” the school said.

“The boy was treated at the hospital and is stable. The police are investigating the matter further.

“We wish the injured boy a speedy recovery.”

Gwala did not say which school the injured boy attended, or whether the person who stabbed him was a learner.

*The story was updated after police confirmed at a later stage the correct age of the victim
