Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams was beaming with pride after his team was crowned ‘Kings of Africa’ on a historic evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday.

Sundowns held Moroccan outfit AS FAR to a 1–1 draw, courtesy of a goal from midfielder Teboho Mokoena on the stroke of half-time, to win 2–1 on aggregate. The South African giants had won the first leg 1–0 in Pretoria last week.

Williams also played a pivotal role in the victory after saving a second-half penalty when the scores were locked at 1–1.

The skipper believes Sundowns are fully deserving of their second star after last winning the CAF Champions League exactly 10 years ago. It was also sweet revenge after losing last year’s final against Egyptian side Pyramids.

“What this team has been through, not only this season—the last four, five, six years, knocking on the door every season, playing over 60, 70 games, the travel distance that we do non-stop—finally the door opened for us. We deserve it fully, rightfully so,” Williams said.

The Bafana Bafana captain also thanked the South African public for inspiring them to continue striving to be the best on the continent.

“To the family, the Motsepe family, the technical team, the Masandawana, the entire South Africa, thank you for the support, for the criticism, for being hard on us, because we know we are the pillar in South Africa.

“Finally, we get to add the star. Amazing. Thank you so much.
