Weekend weather forecast for South Africa: What to expect

As South Africans head into the final weekend of July, the weather remains partly cloudy and chilly in many parts of the country. While the central and western interior will enjoy fine and dry conditions, the eastern and southern regions are in for isolated showers, and possible light snowfall over the high-lying Eastern Cape mountains by Sunday.

National forecast

Saturday 26 July:

Mostly fine in the central and western interior (Free State, Northern Cape, North West).

Partly cloudy and cold to cool over the east and south, with isolated light showers possible.

Sunday 27 July:

A continuation of cloudy and cool conditions in the south and east, with a 30% chance of rain.

Light snowfall is possible over mountainous areas in the Eastern Cape.

Gauteng

Saturday: Fine and crisp. Pretoria 22°C | 6°C, Joburg 21°C | 4°C.

Sunday: Cooler with more cloud. Highs of 20°C in Pretoria, 17°C in Johannesburg. No rain expected.

KwaZulu-Natal

Saturday: Cloudy with a chance of light coastal rain. Durban 21°C | 15°C.

Sunday: Cloudy and noticeably cooler, max 16°C in Durban. Slight chance of scattered showers inland.

Eastern Cape

Saturday: Overcast and cool. East London 15°C | 11°C, Gqeberha 15°C | 11°C.

Sunday: Cloudy with 30% chance of light rain. Light snowfall possible in mountain areas (e.g. Barkly East, Lady Grey).

Western Cape

Saturday: Mostly sunny in Cape Town, high of 17°C. Clouds are increasing toward evening.

Sunday: Cape Town warms slightly to 19°C, low of 8°C. Dry, but cloudy along the southern coastline.

Free State

Saturday: Cold start at 5°C. Sunny and dry during the day, max 16°C.

Sunday: Slightly colder morning at 2°C. Fine skies, no rain.

Limpopo

Saturday: Fine and sunny. High of 22°C, low of 9°C.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, cooler at 16°C | 10°C. No rain.

Mpumalanga

Saturday: Cloudy periods with spotty drizzle possible in the east.

Sunday: Light showers may persist in eastern escarpment areas.

Northern Cape

Saturday: Fine and dry. High of 20°C, low of 6°C.

Sunday: Warmer at 22°C. Dry conditions persist.

North West

Clear, dry, and cool all weekend. No significant rainfall expected.

Weather highlights
