With the 2027 Rugby World Cup draw just hours away in Sydney, Australia, scheduled for 11 am SA time, World Rugby has released an exciting cinematic teaser video ahead of the event.

The video is made in a somewhat humorous Mad Max style, which certainly seems to capture the building excitement and anticipation for the event.

After a lizard is seen next to a rugby ball with the branding for the 2027 showpiece, former Rugby World Cup winners George Gregan (Australia) and Johnny Wilkinson (England) open the video looking at what appears to be a sandstorm coming their way.

They greet each other, and then say: “Here we go.”

Rugby Showdown: South Africa vs. Australia in Epic Teaser Video

We soon see a rugby player emerge from the sandstorm who picks up the ball.

Next to appear is a giant South Africa-themed monster truck, complete with the horns of the Springboks and a number of SA flags. The sheer size and colourful appearance of the SA representative is a clear nod to the juggernauts of World Rugby at the moment, having just won two Rugby Championship titles in a row before going undefeated on their November Tour.

A giant Aussie Kangaroo-like machine then jumps into frame, and we notice the Australian flags and supporters on its back. The camera then moves for a closer look to see an Aussie man holding his barbecue tongs aloft with a sausage which is promptly struck by lightning to instantly grill the chunk of meat.

After that, the camera zooms out to space to see Australia from above with the Webb Ellis trophy hurtling towards it.

It’s a great teaser video that doesn’t take itself too seriously, perhaps akin to how Australian rugby supporters view their chances at the quadrennial showpiece.

World Rugby certainly did something right when they made this video.
