A night of music quickly turned into one of love and celebration after American rapper Young Thug (real name Jeffery Williams) proposed to his longtime partner and singer, Mariah the Scientist (real name Mariah Amani Buckles).
The rapper went down on one knee during his Home Town Hero Concert in Atlanta on Tuesday, December 16, pulling out an engagement ring while the words “Will You Marry Me” were displayed in the background.
The pair started dating in 2021 after they collaborated on a song together.
However, things took a turn during their relationship when Williams got arrested in 2022 for criminal street-gang activities, murder and more.
During this time, Buckles supported him unconditionally and would even sing “Free Thug” when she would perform at concerts.
Everything appeared perfect for the couple following Williams’ October 2024 release from jail.
However, this changed a year later when leaked jail calls publicly exposed the rapper’s infidelity, revealing he had been cheating on Buckles while he was in jail.
In November 2025, rumours that the pair had gone their separate ways started circulating, but they never confirmed or denied the online claims.
While the engagement was heartfelt, fans of the “Burning Blue” hitmaker had mixed reactions about the engagement news.
One fan online commented: “Congratulations to my favourite girl, so happy for her!”
“Young Thug just proposed to Mariah the Scientist, and I am not happy,” another fan shared.
Another added: “Dude, why is everyone hating?? Congrats to Young Thug and Mariah.”
A few weeks before the engagement, Buckles shared in a candid interview with Power 105.1 FM that she desires to get married before having children.
“I want to be married,” she shared and added that she wants at least one child.
“I’ll start with that and see how I can manage,” she continued before explaining why she wants to get married.
“I just want a commitment that doesn’t involve an obligation to a baby. I just want it to be out of love, not out of responsibility.”
