The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has launched a large-scale sterilisation initiative aimed at controlling animal overpopulation and improving pet health across the Khayelitsha community.

The campaign aims to fund and execute an additional 1,000 dog and cat sterilisations. This initiative will bolster the approximately 3,000 procedures the organisation already performs annually in Khayelitsha and its surrounding areas.

“We are thrilled to roll out this campaign and make a meaningful difference in the lives of dogs, cats, and the families who care for them,” said Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda.

“Over the past few months, we have been registering pets for the programme while educating community members about the importance and benefits of sterilisation.”

To fund a single sterilisation and cover these essential supplies, the organization is appealing to 1,000 individual supporters for a contribution of R200 each. For many animal lovers,  “A typical restaurant meal today can cost around R200,” du Plessis said..

“We invite animal lovers to consider giving up one meal out and instead investing in sterilisation that will have a lasting impact on the well-being of animals in our community. Together, we can help create a healthier and more sustainable future for pets in Khayelitsha,” du Plessis said.

Three Decades of Community Service

Led by a dedicated veterinary team including Dr. Brian Bergman and Dr. Karen Hodsdon, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has provided essential veterinary and animal welfare services to the Khayelitsha community for 30 years.

Each month, the organisation provides care for as many as 1,500 animals via its veterinary hospital, surgical unit, homeless pet shelter, mobile clinics, and animal ambulance service.

Through its ongoing outreach and educational initiatives, Mdzananda continues to advocate for responsible pet ownership and elevated animal welfare standards throughout the region.
