As the festive season rolls in, there’s just something about curling up with a good romcom that hits differently. Maybe it’s the warm lights, the holiday chaos, or just the craving for a little romance to balance the festive madness.
For fans of local drama with a sweet dose of love and family, the upcoming miniseries “Ek, Hy en Jy” (Me, Him and You) looks set to deliver exactly that.
The story centres on Soefie (Reandi Grey), a woman who has spent sixteen years putting her younger sister Katrien’s needs ahead of her own. Since losing their parents, Soefie has carried the heavy responsibility of looking after Katrien (Blyde Smit) and, in the process, has quietly sacrificed her own dreams.
Enter the holiday-season dilemma, her pilot boyfriend Nicolaas, played by André Lötter, has an incredible work opportunity, but it comes with a catch. He wants her to move with him to Hong Kong.
Soefie says no. But just when she thinks her love life is settled, Jakes (played by Bobby van Jaarsveld), who is a former flame and Nicolaas’s brother, reappears, adding a tangle of past love and lingering “what ifs”.
And this isn’t just a tale of romantic entanglements. Set against the sweeping backdrop of a breathtaking horse farm, the series weaves in family dynamics, festive revelry, and those tender moments that make you sigh.
Brink (Johan Scholtz) is determined to find Jakes a wife, while Elise (Brümilda van Rensburg) will go to any lengths to shield her sons from heartbreak.
Katrien discovers her own romance with the affable Danie (Neil Sharim), who injects humour into the mix, while Thomas, Jakes’s son from a previous relationship (Dawian van der Westhuizen) adds that extra layer of family warmth.
Lizé Vosloo, who both wrote and directed the series, has a way of telling stories that feel both intimate and cinematic.
Her writing is emotive without tipping into melodrama, and her direction ensures that every stolen glance, awkward family moment, and festive celebration lands with charm, depth, and a little cheeky sparkle.
