Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Tiyani Mabunda found God through Shepherd Bushiri

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tiyani Mabunda is continuing to balance his off-field duties as a club ambassador and executive assistant with his spiritual calling, following recent footage of him preaching in Pretoria.

Mabunda retired from professional football in August 2021 at the age of 33, transitioning into an ambassadorial role at Chloorkop after a decorated playing career that featured multiple domestic titles and the 2016 CAF Champions League trophy.

Throughout the twilight of his playing days, Mabunda was outspoken regarding his Christian faith, crediting self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri as his spiritual mentor.

“I have come to understand God under his leadership,” Mabunda stated at the time, reflecting on how Bushiri’s guidance helped navigate pivotal moments in his life and career. “It was through his teachings, preaching, and well wishes that I was able to reach this level in life.”

Following the departure of Bushiri and his wife, Mary, from South Africa to Malawi in late 2020 amid ongoing legal proceedings, Mabunda’s primary public focus shifted to his rising corporate responsibility at Sundowns. He was appointed as right-hand man to Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, who took the reins after his father, Patrice Motsepe, assumed the CAF presidency.

In addition to his administrative role alongside Motsepe, Mabunda remains a regular fixture on the club’s media channels as a analyst for the official Pitchside Podcast.

However, recent video footage shows that the former midfielder’s ministerial pursuits remain central to his life, with Mabunda filmed delivering sermons at ECG Pretoria TJNC, an offshoot ministry associated with Bushiri’s network.
