From addiction to clarity: Toya Delazy celebrates three years of inspiring sobriety

As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month and Ocsober, Toya Delazy has bravely shared her journey through addiction.

The talented musician recently penned a heartfelt message to herself, marking a significant milestone in her life: three years of sobriety.

In a post on Instagram, Toya reflected on her achievements, stating, “3 years of sobriety today. Life really does change; I never thought it could be me. I had a relapse along the way, but on the 23rd of October 2022, I made a promise I’ve kept till today.”

Toya expressed her pride in her decision to embrace sobriety, particularly in an industry often centred around partying.

“I did it for me, and I’m so proud of that decision, especially being in an industry that’s so party-focused. I’ve fallen in love with the clarity that sobriety has given me through all the challenges that have come up along the journey,” she added.

In her post, she also offered words of encouragement to those who are struggling with addiction.

“To anyone trying to quit, I want to encourage you: it’s possible, no matter how many times you have to start again. Just don’t give up. I’m not better than anyone; I’m just grateful to still be here, clear, and growing,” she said.

The Afro-rave musician received an outpouring of support from her followers in the comments section.

Fellow South African celebrity SK Khoza (@skcoza) wrote, “Onwards and upwards 🙌 sister… Stay strong on this journey.”

Another follower, @dj_de_los_angelez, commented, “It’s definitely an industry that has easy access to all that’s not good for you, but we can find our way when we sit back and look at why we’re in a party atmosphere!

Toya moved to the UK in 2017, relocating from South Africa to London to pursue her career as an independent artist.

She sought to find a new spiritual path and focus on her African heritage through her music.

A multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, pianist, producer, and performer, Toya is the granddaughter of the late Zulu chief and statesman Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

She began playing classical piano and composing at the age of nine, developing a unique sound that fuses electronic beats, drum and bass, and Zulu lyricism – a style she has coined “afro-rave”.
