Norway and England are set to headline a thrilling weekend of Fifa World Cup quarter-final action when they clash at Miami Stadium on Saturday at 11pm. The weekend’s curtain-raiser features Belgium and Spain at LA Stadium on Friday at 9pm, while reigning champions Argentina and Switzerland wrap up the round at Kansas City Stadium on Sunday at 3am.

With only three semi-final spots remaining alongside the winner of Thursday night’s opener between Morocco and France, we break down the defining factors that will shape these mouthwatering weekend blockbusters.

Spain vs Belgium: Vibrant La Roja vs The Golden Generation’s Last Stand

Spain currently boasts some of the most enterprising young talents in world football. The Barcelona trio of Lamine Yamal (18), Gavi (21), and Pedri (23) have lit up the tournament, demonstrating why they are the present and future of the sport.

Under the guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente, these youngsters have brilliantly blended their explosive qualities with a winning mentality, building on their historic triumph at Euro 2024.

However, Spain’s quest to add a world title to their collection faces a massive hurdle. They come up against a Belgian side ready to roll the dice one final time to ensure their “Golden Generation” finally secures international silverware.

Superstars Romelu Lukaku (33), Kevin De Bruyne (35), and Thibaut Courtois (34) are likely on their final World Cup run and will be highly motivated after cruising through the earlier rounds to edge closer to the ultimate prize.

Norway vs England: The Charging Vikings vs The Three Lions

The Norwegians have made a spectacular return to the global showpiece, powering their way into the quarter-finals after carrying their unbeaten qualification momentum directly into the tournament.

Goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland has spearheaded Norway’s near-perfect tournament run, leading the line with incredible efficiency. Fresh off a devastating performance in the last round, Haaland will be eager to hunt down England – the home country of his club, Manchester City.

To book their place in the final four and keep the dream of “bringing football home” alive, England must tighten up a leaky defence. At the same time, they need captain Harry Kane to maintain his clinical form in front of goal if they are to end a 60-year trophy drought.

Argentina vs Switzerland: The Champions vs The Stubborn Swiss

Defending champions Argentina remain completely focused on retaining their crown, and their formula for success revolves around letting captain Lionel Messi express himself freely. The 38-year-old maestro has repaid that tactical faith beautifully, continuing to break records as the World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer and playmaker heading into this clash.

While Messi will need to maintain his sharp edge, his supporting cast must remain resolute. Switzerland enters the match as heavy underdogs, but they have proven notoriously stubborn defensively.

Having mastered the art of frustrating elite opposition, the Swiss know that if they can take the game deep into the closing stages, anything can happen as they look to pull off the biggest upset of the tournament.
