A major multi-provincial police and private security operation has led to the arrest of 16 suspects following a brazen double business robbery at Goldfields Mall in Welkom, where luxury goods valued at approximately R900,000 were stolen.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the incident unfolded on Wednesday evening at around 7.45pm when armed suspects stormed two clothing chain stores inside the shopping centre, ransacking the outlets before fleeing with high-value merchandise, including luxury clothing, watches and perfumes.

Authorities described the breakthrough as a “seamless, swift, and cross-provincial collaboration” that dealt “a massive blow to criminal syndicates following the arrest of 16 suspects linked to a high-stakes double business robbery at the Goldfields Mall in Welkom.”

Private security teams were first on the scene and immediately launched a high-speed pursuit as the suspects split into multiple getaway vehicles. During the chase, gunfire was exchanged between the fleeing suspects and responding security forces. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

“Private security operators immediately responded to the incident and initiated a high speed pursuit as the suspects split up into multiple getaway vehicles. During the chase, a shootout ensued between the suspects and security forces but with no injuries or fatalities reported,” Kareli said.

SAPS tactical units, including Welkom Public Order Police (POP), Welkom K9 Unit, and the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, were rapidly deployed to support the operation.

The first arrests were made between Welkom and Odendaalsrus, where four suspects were apprehended and a large quantity of stolen stock recovered. Authorities also seized a white Kia Sportage and a white Nissan NP300 bakkie allegedly used in the robbery.

Intelligence from the scene indicated that additional suspects had fled toward neighbouring provinces, triggering a coordinated cross-border pursuit.

Acting on a tip-off, police in Orkney and Stilfontein intercepted a white Toyota Quantum minibus carrying nine suspects. Four firearms and ammunition were recovered from the vehicle.

“The firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were used in other crimes,” Kareli confirmed.

In a further breakthrough, officers in Villiers intercepted a blue Hyundai i20, leading to the arrest of the remaining three suspects.

All 16 suspects, aged between 20 and 44, are now in custody and face charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear soon in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.

Police have praised the coordinated response, highlighting the effectiveness of joint operations between SAPS units and private security in dismantling fast-moving criminal networks operating across provincial lines.
