Former Springbok hooker James “Bullet” Dalton has poured cold water on the hype surrounding current Bok flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, insisting the rising star is nothing special.
“When Sacha has an average game… he’s playing behind a dominant pack, but he still doesn’t have any X-factor—to me, he doesn’t have X-factor,” Dalton declared during a recent appearance on the Omniaudioafrica Instagram page.
The 54-year-old’s sharp critique follows South Africa’s emphatic 3-1 series triumph over the All Blacks, sealed with a dominant 43-28 victory over New Zealand in Baltimore over the weekend.
Dalton was a member of the iconic 1995 Springbok Rugby World Cup squad on home soil, though his tournament was cut short after a fiery brawl against Canada earned him a costly suspension. Missing out on the side that ultimately lifted the Webb Ellis Cup remains one of the defining disappointments of his career.
Renowned as “Bullet” during his playing days, Dalton built a reputation as an uncompromising, hot-headed character both on and off the pitch—a fierce reputation matched only by his formidable ego.
Yet, the outspoken former hooker has taken clear exception to the natural self-assurance displayed by Feinberg-Mngomezulu.
“He has got great talent, he comes from a good school, everybody’s turning him into a rockstar,” Dalton noted. “He’s even made posts [saying] ‘I’m a legend, I don’t care what anyone says’—all that sort of stuff. That’s great, good for him. Only time will tell. And trust me, the world will teach you a lesson very, very quickly—it will swallow you up.”
Dalton doubled down on his assessment, arguing that the 24-year-old’s individual performances are heavily flattered by the overwhelming strength of the Springbok forward engine room ahead of him.
“When he’s just having a mediocre game, or average game, behind a dominant pack of forwards, everyone’s singing his praises.”
