Five people have been arrested at a drug manufacturing laboratory in Krugersdorp.

Police uncovered the multi-million-rand lab on a farm during an intelligence-driven operation.

Mandrax and ecstasy found

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said police discovered quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy tablets at the suspected drug manufacturing laboratory.

“Five South African nationals who were found at the premises have been arrested,” Mathe said.

Senior SAPS officers were en route to the scene, where further assessments and investigations were underway.

Police said the premises remained an active crime scene.

Another laboratory uncovered in North West

The discovery comes a day after another suspected multi-million rand drug manufacturing laboratory was uncovered in the North West.

Four suspects were arrested and four firearms, including a rifle and three handguns, were seized during an intelligence-driven operation at a plot in Scheerpoort, near Hartbeespoort Dam, on Tuesday.

North West police said Hartbeespoort Dam SAPS Crime Prevention members received information about suspected illegal activities at the property.

The information was shared with Brits Crime Intelligence and the Hartbeespoort Dam K9 unit for further intelligence gathering and verification.

Drugs and firearms seized

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said officers arrived at the identified address and found three women and a man.

“A search of the premises uncovered what appeared to be a drug laboratory, with processed drugs, a drug production mixture and equipment allegedly used in the manufacturing of drugs,” Myburgh said.

The four suspects – a 39-year-old Zimbabwean man and three women aged between 23 and 29 – were arrested.

They face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as dealing in and manufacturing drugs in terms of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, 1992 (Act 140 of 1992).

Policr said suspects are expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police have uncovered quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy at a suspected multi-million rand drug manufacturing laboratory in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, where five South African nationals were arrested.

Police vow to target drug syndicates

North West Provincial Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Arthur Peter Adams commended the officers for their swift response and collaboration, which led to the arrests.

He said police remained committed to dismantling organised crime syndicates involved in the manufacture and distribution of drugs.

Adams warned criminals that the SAPS remained “resolute and relentless” in the fight against crime.

Police said investigations were continuing, including efforts to determine the value of the drugs seized.
