In our News Wrap today we have a look at some of the pointers coming out of the State of the Nation Address:
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has again been given the task of taking the country through yet another National State of Disaster, this time with the focus being the electricity crisis. President Cyril Ramaphosa made this announcement during his State of the Nation Address.
The Social Relief of Distress Grant is set to continue. with the President adding that government will ensure that existing grants are increased to cushion the poor against rising inflation. (25 million South Africans currently receive some sort of financial assistance from government)
The president also announced that an Electricity Minister will be announced within the presidency. President Ramaphosa said the Electricity Minister’s main focus will be to end the current energy crisis and to steer the electricity infrastructure out of a total blackout
This has received backlash from opposition parties like the Democratic Alliance saying that there are too many politicians meddling in the electricity infrastructure of SA.
AND
It was yet another year of total chaos in Parliament as for a consecutive year the EFF had to be forcibly removed from the National Assembly, with EFF Leader Julius Malema threatening to take the speaker to court.
ATM leader Vuyo Zungula was also kicked out of the house, saying the speaker intimidated him when all he was doing was ‘holding the president accountable’.
