Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday, putting their Betway Premiership title defence back on track.

The Buccaneers returned to the top of the table but had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock, but three goals after the interval secured all three points and moved them to seven points from their opening three league matches.

After a goalless first half, Pirates appeared destined for another frustrating afternoon before off-season arrival Ghampani Lungu produced a moment of individual quality to put the visitors ahead on the hour mark.

The experienced Zambian collected the ball on the edge of the box, swivelled away from his marker and unleashed a powerful effort that left Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali unable to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net.

Lungu’s opener changed the complexion of the contest, with Pirates quickly adding a second goal just three minutes later.

The Buccaneers doubled their advantage from a corner, with Lebone Seema rising highest to head home his first goal of the season.

The defender, who was named Defender of the Season last campaign, showed his value at both ends of the pitch as Pirates took firm control of the contest.

Second-half substitute Daniel Msendami then put the result beyond doubt when he added a third goal for the Buccaneers.

It was a significant moment for the forward, who scored his first goal for Pirates since arriving at the club in January.

Having been held to a draw in their previous league outing, the result will come as a welcome boost for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his charges as they look to build momentum early in the campaign.

Pirates will now turn their attention to cup football, with an MTN8 clash against Sekhukhune United awaiting them next weekend.
