THE big news as far as the South African Football Association (SAFA) is concerned is the upcoming announcement of a new Bafana Bafana coach, set for Saturday, August 8, but switching to more mundane matters, the association’s presidential race is also gaining momentum.
Bafana have been without a coach since Hugo Broos’ five-year reign came to an end on July 31. After Broos guided Bafana to a historic World Cup knockout-stage run, South African football fans will be expecting nothing less than winning the 2027 AFCON from the incoming coach.
The qualifiers for the continental showpiece begin in fewer than 60 days, on September 21, with South Africa expected to cruise against co-hosts Kenya, Guinea and minnows Eritrea.
The name of Pitso Mosimane remains at the top of the list, while rumours regarding Frenchman Hervé Renard were quashed on Wednesday when it was revealed he has returned to the Ivory Coast hot seat.
Also on Wednesday, the association reported that it has handed over to the Governance Committee the nominations for various positions that will be contested at the SAFA Elective Congress next month.
SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao handed over the files to Governance Committee members Victor Mogajane (chairman), Tumi Dlamini, Abel Ramolotja, Shakespeare Hadebe and Anzel Laubscher at SAFA House in the presence of members of the media.
The Governance Committee, which is an independent body, will be tasked with dealing with any issues around the candidates and checking whether they meet the criteria for nomination in terms of the SAFA statutes. The documents submitted at the press conference held at SAFA House on Wednesday relate to candidates nominated for various positions.
“The aim of this press conference was to hand over all the files with all the nominations that we received on July 29, 2026, which was the deadline for the submission of nominations for various positions within the SAFA executive committee,” the SAFA CEO was quoted as saying in a statement on the association’s website.
“The SAFA Elective Congress is on September 12, 2026, and we have almost four weeks to work on these files before you. Our submission will probably be around 28 August 2026, and so we will hit the ground running in that regard. We really appreciate that we have been entrusted with this responsibility once more in 2026,” Chairman Mogajane said.
The SAFA elections are set for September 12, and the big presidential race is between the incumbent, Danny Jordaan, and AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu.
