The race for South African music’s biggest honours has officially entered the home stretch after the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) unveiled this year’s Top 5 nominees, with gospel stars Hle and Amadodana Ase Wesile leading the pack with three nominations each.
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) announced the shortlist on Monday, officially kicking off the countdown to the 32nd edition of the awards, dubbed the SAMA32 Homecoming Edition, which will take place at the Sun City Superbowl in the North West on August 15.
RiSA said this year’s Top 5 categories highlight a diverse mix of artists and genres, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the most competitive editions of the awards in recent years.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Top 5 nominees of the 32nd Annual South African Music Awards,” said SAMA spokesperson Unathi Gwija.
“Our Top 5 categories reflect a new era where talent, artistry and resilience converge. Together, these artists represent a richly layered and highly competitive field where excellence is not confined to one sound, one generation or one genre.
“Their achievements set the stage for what promises to be one of the most dynamic and unpredictable editions of the SAMAs in recent history.”
Gwija said the annual Top 5 announcement marks the official start of the race to South Africa’s biggest music awards.
“The much-vaunted Top 5 announcement is the ignition point of the SAMA journey. By unveiling the artists competing for Album of the Year, Duo or Group of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, RiSA officially launches the race to SAMA32,” she said.
“Dubbed the Homecoming Edition, this milestone builds anticipation, fuels healthy rivalry and galvanises fans across the country to rally behind their favourite artists as South Africa counts down to music’s biggest night.”
The awards are backed by a number of partners, including the Motsepe Foundation, the North West Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), South African Tourism, the SABC, the South African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA), the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO), RiSA Audio Visual (RAV), MNM Funerals and Settlers Media.
Gwija also acknowledged the independent judging panels responsible for selecting this year’s finalists.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to our independent judging panels whose dedication, professionalism and rigorous deliberations safeguard the credibility and integrity of the South African Music Awards,” she said.
“Their commitment ensures that the country’s finest artists receive the recognition they deserve while inspiring the next generation of South African musical excellence.”
With the finalists now confirmed, attention turns to Sun City on August 15, when South Africa’s top recording artists will compete for the industry’s most prestigious honours.
