DJ, record producer, entrepreneur and kwaito pioneer, Oscar “Oskido” Mdlongwa has been bestowed by President Cyril Ramaphosa the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver.

In celebration, South African musicians celebrated Oskido’s achievements by reflecting on his contributions to their careers.

In a video posted on Instagram, Black Coffee, Nhlanhla Nciza, DJ Zinhle, Kwesta and EFF leader Julius Malema praised the Kalawa Jazmee Records co-founder.

“I walk into any room knowing that I’m different. It’s because I got a call sign from someone like him,” says Grammy award-winning artist Black Coffee.

“I literally would be a potato if it wasn’t for Oskido,” said DJ Zinhle, who was signed to Kalawa Jazmee Records.

Singer-songwriter Berita said: “He literally gave me my first big break.”

Multi-award-winning rapper Kweasta said, “This man has done so much for so many people.”

Mafikizolo singer and fashion designer Nhlanhla Nciza, who has worked with Oskido for many years said: “He’s that leader.”

Malema, who is a lover of South African culture and creatives, called Oskido the “Mandela of music”.

DJ Shimza reflected that Oskido’s contribution goes beyond just what he has done in his career.

Legendary Kwaito Zola 7 advised those looking up to Oskido to focus on his business mind. “I think a lot of young people also need, if they want to be serious in the music industry, they need to look into the business mind of Oskido.”

Scotts Maphuma, who found himself being mentored by Oskido after he dealt with public backlash on how he was handling fame, as he wanted to set boundaries with his fans, also contributed in the video about Oskido being a father to the game.

The Order of Ikhamanga recognises South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport. Oskido is recognised for creating opportunities for young musicians, extending from his own success as a DJ, record producer, entrepreneur, and kwaito pioneer.
