The St Stithians College community has been left devastated following the deaths of former pupil Ethan Coetzee, 19, and Grade 11 pupil Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, 17.

The pair were found dead, apparently in the same room at a lodge in Sabie, Mpumalanga, on August 3.

Police have opened an inquest docket as investigations continue.

“Police have opened an inquest docket for investigation after a male and female were found deceased at a lodge in Sabie. A postmortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death,” said police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.

In separate tributes, St Stithians remembered both pupils for their leadership, sporting achievements and the impact they made on the school community.

Paying tribute to Ethan, the college described him as a young man who built strong friendships throughout his years at the school, where he attended from Grade R to Grade 12.

The school said he was known for his strength, commitment and humility, embracing opportunities in academics, sport and community service with enthusiasm.

Ethan earned rugby colours as a member of the school’s 1st XV, was a national champion in eventing and served as a senior pupil in Penryn House.

The college said he was respected by teammates, coaches and younger pupils, and was remembered for his warmth, charisma and ability to encourage those around him.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, Class of 2025 and all who mourn the loss of this joyful, determined young man,” the school said.

The school also paid tribute to Cameron, who joined St Stithians in Grade R in 2015 and had been part of the Saints community for 12 years.

The Grade 11 pupil was remembered as a talented rower and netball player whose kindness, warmth and determination left a lasting impression on pupils and staff.

St Stithians Girls’ College said Cameron’s commitment to rowing earned the respect of her coaches and teammates, while her leadership saw her become a mentor to younger members of the rowing programme.

“She was a natural leader and a mentor to many younger girls in the rowing programme, often taking on the role of a supportive ‘big sister’ who encouraged and inspired those around her,” the school said.
