Before there was Relebohile Mofokeng, there was Cassius Mailula. Following a breakout season at Mamelodi Sundowns, Mailula was tipped to set not only domestic football but the international stage alight.
Immediately after that dazzling debut season, Mailula earned a high-profile move to MLS side Toronto FC.
While the local football fraternity celebrated his growth, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos offered a cautionary tale, lamenting that the move was “too soon” and warning that Mailula would struggle for game time given the fierce competition in his position.
Broos’ prediction proved prophetic. Mailula made only a handful of appearances for the Toronto first team and spent the last two seasons on loan at Wydad Casablanca and K.V. Kortrijk – where he flourished and stumbled, respectively.
Now a free agent after mutually parting ways with Toronto, Mailula is eyeing a path to redemption and self-discovery. We look at the options the talented forward can explore to revive his career.
Option 1: Remain in Europe
Mailula failed to make a single appearance during his season-long loan stay at Kortrijk. That lack of game time must have been a bitter pill to swallow, especially since he had enjoyed a stellar, productive campaign with Wydad Casablanca just a season prior.
However, he cannot afford to give up on his European dream. Europe remains the ultimate ceiling and the stage where footballers must compete to prove themselves at the highest level.
Furthermore, Broos has consistently emphasised that Bafana players need European experience to help the national team build on the strong foundation laid over the last five years. Staying in Europe, even at a lower-tier club, would keep Mailula in the international conversation.
Option 2: Return to North Africa
While South Africa’s Betway Premiership has grown into one of the continent’s elite leagues, North African leagues remain arguably the most attractive in Africa, serving as a prominent shop window for scouts across the globe.
Mailula already has a taste of North African football following an impressive stint at Wydad under his countryman, Rhulani Mokwena.
A return to the region makes strategic sense. Playing in North Africa would test him mentally; it keeps him outside his comfort zone and away from home, forcing him into a “sink or swim” environment where he can channel his focus into fully unleashing his undeniable talent.
Option 3: Return to the PSL (The Last Resort)
There is no place like home. Having already adapted to three different leagues, continents, and countries in a short span, Mailula might need to consider a return to South Africa to recharge his batteries.
In the Betway Premiership, he would find familiar surroundings. Should he join any of the “Big Three” – Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, or Orlando Pirates – he would reunite with familiar faces, making his re-adaptation seamless.
More importantly, joining a top SA club would grant him access to CAF continental football next season – a perfect platform to market himself back to overseas scouts and prove he belongs at the highest level.
