If you are looking for something special to do in Durban over the festive season, the Durban Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights should be high on your list. It is one of those outings that feels instantly festive, whether you are going with little ones, visiting family, or just soaking up the holiday atmosphere with friends.
Now in its ninth year, the Trail of Lights has become a much-loved Durban tradition and proudly holds the title of South Africa’s largest festive event.
Each evening, the Durban Botanic Gardens are transformed into a glowing wonderland filled with colour, music and festive surprises.
It is the kind of place where kids stare wide-eyed at the lights, parents slow down to enjoy the moment, and everyone leaves feeling a little more festive.
The Trail lights up the gardens from 6 pm to 10 pm on the following dates:
- 10 to 24 December 2025
- 26 to 30 December 2025
- 1 to 3 January 2026
This year’s experience is bigger and brighter, with an extended route, brand new themed displays and plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
Expect glittering light tunnels, cheerful festive characters and magical moments around every corner.
There is also no shortage of things to do.
Two Food Gardens will be serving festive favourites and gourmet treats, while live entertainment every evening keeps the mood upbeat.
Kids can get creative at Ms Claus Craft Café, meet Santa at his Grotto or visit Santa’s Workshop to make a cuddly friend or shop for stocking fillers.
For the more adventurous, zipline rides through the gardens’ towering trees add a fun thrill to the evening.
New additions for 2025 include the beautifully illuminated Tropical Display House, Toy Kingdom’s interactive X-Shot Tunnels, a holiday-themed virtual reality activation and a Polar Express Zone complete with a life-sized polar bear for photos.
The Trail of Lights also gives back, with charity initiatives supporting river conservation, rhino protection and marine research through engaging and interactive displays along the route.
Tickets start from R85 to R95 per person, with special rates for pensioners and groups.
Tickets are available online via Webtickets or at Pick n Pay and Boxer stores nationwide.
Tickets at the door cost R100 per person and are subject to availability. Children aged two and under enter for free.
