Ladies and Gentlemen: Something happened last night that we at Magic828 have never experienced before.
Tara-Lee, our weekday’s afternoon sports reporter has texted that she is speechless 🙂
Never has she been silent for this long – hahahahaha.
One of her bucket list items were checked last night when she not only sat in the stadium to watch the game between Federer and Nadal, but she got to meet them afterwards.
Not even loadshedding has been able to achieve this silence from her 🙂
Seriously though, it was a magic evening in the mother city:
- Trevor Noah and Rafael Nadal named themselves: N-Squared
- Roger Federer and Bill Gates named themselves: Gateserer
- Gateserer beat N-Squared 6 -3 in the celebrity warm up game.
- Federer claimed a 6-4 | 3-6 | 6-3 victory over Nadal in windy conditions in the main game.
A few stand alone thoughts / incidents / comedic moments:
- Trevor: Before his service – “Can you please turn off the air conditioning”
(referring to our infamous wind 🙂 )
- Trevor: Racing around his side of the court after scoring a point as if he had scored a goal in the world cup final (and making vuvuzela sounds)
- Bill showing that if Microsoft had not been a success , he might have stood on chance on the tennis circuit
- Trevor and Roger in a stare-down on either side of the net (after the fact that Trevor has actually dropped his racquet in attempting to hit the ball)
- Trevor trying to be John McEnroe and picking a fight with the match official 🙂
- Roger’s mother, Lynette receiving a huge cheer from the audience and still holding a strong SA accent: “Ek is baie bly om in Suid Afrika te wees”
Roger Federer may have won the game, but it was the fundraising cause that is victorious.
$1 million (about R14.8 million) was the goal, but in fact almost $3 million was raised.
It was also an evening for a world record. The previous record for most people watching a tennis game live was in Mexico City when 42 517 people watched Federer play Zverev.
Last night, 51 954 people were in the Cape Town Stadium.
It was however more than a tennis match. It was a show of unity, cause and magic spirit. Well done to all, Roger, Rafael, Bill and Trevor, organisers, sponsors and volunteers.
Cape Town, we did good.
