While streaming services are currently popular among South Africans, people will still go to the cinema if it’s a highly anticipated film or if it’s something they really want to watch. I mean, have you seen the lines for Spider-Man?
However, the biggest factor preventing people from going to the cinema is the exorbitant prices. Movie tickets are expensive, with standard 2D ranging between R100 and R150. IMAX and VIP cinemas would have you digging your pockets for up to an eye-watering R220 – and that is without the snacks.

IMAX vs regular cinema
For many moviegoers, the decision ultimately boils down to whether the bigger screen and enhanced sound can justify the higher ticket price.
While both offer a decent cinematic experience, IMAX is designed to be more immersive through larger screens, specialised projection systems and powerful audio.
Screen size
The biggest difference between IMAX and a regular cinema is the screen.
Regular cinema screens typically measure between 10 and 16 metres wide, with sizes varying depending on the venue.
IMAX screens are much larger, usually ranging from 18 to 24 metres wide, with some of the world’s largest IMAX theatres exceeding 30 metres in width and more than 20 metres in height.
Unlike the standard widescreen cinema, IMAX screens are also taller, allowing them to fill more of a viewer’s field of vision. This creates a more immersive experience, particularly for action-packed or visually spectacular films.
Picture quality
IMAX theatres use specialised projection systems designed to produce brighter, sharper and more detailed images than standard digital cinemas.
Many IMAX venues use dual digital projectors or IMAX Laser projection, which offers higher resolution, greater brightness, improved contrast, deeper blacks, more accurate colours and better image consistency across the screen.
Regular cinemas still deliver high-quality digital images, but overall picture quality depends on the projector used by each cinema.
Another advantage of IMAX is that some films are specially formatted for its taller aspect ratio. This means viewers can see up to 26% more of the image during selected scenes compared with a standard cinema screening, which crops the top and bottom of those scenes.
Audio
The sound experience is another bragging point for IMAX.
Each IMAX theatre features a custom-designed sound system that is calibrated specifically for that auditorium.
Compared with a standard cinema, IMAX generally delivers clearer dialogue, more powerful bass, greater dynamic range, more precise surround sound and higher volume without distortion.
Regular cinemas typically use surround sound systems such as Dolby 5.1 or 7.1, which still provide an enjoyable audio experience but are generally less powerful and less immersive than IMAX.
Immersion
On the topic of immersion, IMAX is designed to make audiences feel more involved in the film. The combination of the larger screen, enhanced picture quality and powerful audio creates a more immersive viewing experience, particularly for blockbuster movies.
Regular cinemas offer a comfortable viewing experience but do not surround viewers with the same scale and intensity.
Which movies benefit most from IMAX?
IMAX has a lot of cool and shiny things, but not every movie necessarily benefits from it.
The biggest advantages of IMAX are most noticeable with films that emphasise large-scale visuals and sound, including action films, sci-fi, superhero movies, nature documentaries, space films and movies filmed with IMAX cameras or specially formatted for IMAX.
If you are looking forward to watching dramas, romantic comedies, independent films and dialogue-driven stories, watching it in a standard cinema will be just as great an experience.
Is IMAX worth the extra money?
Whether IMAX is worth the higher ticket price depends on the film and the viewer’s priorities.
If you’re watching a visually spectacular blockbuster, the larger screen, improved picture quality and more immersive sound can make the experience feel more cinematic.
For movies that rely heavily on visual effects, expansive landscapes or action sequences, many moviegoers consider the premium worth the money.
However, for films that focus on dialogue or storytelling rather than spectacle, a regular cinema often offers a very similar viewing experience at a lower cost.
