Limpopo artist Kharishma (real name Melita Makoma Ribane) has bagged two nominations at this year’s South African Music Awards (Samas).
She received a nod for Music Video Of The Year as well as Record Of The Year for her hit song “Chokeslem.”
The news comes after a week of tragedy, where the Lekompo star was involved in a fatal car accident that left her hospitalised and also claimed the life of one of her friends.
On Friday, October 31, Kharishma and her friends were involved in a fatal crash at the intersection of Grobler and Magazyn Street.
Her family confirmed the incident in a statement: “The accident has unfortunately claimed the life of one of Kharishma’s friends, leaving the other severely injured, including Kharishma.”
They further shared that the singer is receiving medical care and also thanked everyone who has sent well wishes and shown them support during this difficult time.
“Chokeslem” dominated the charts last year, and it also won Song Of The Year on two radio stations, “Thobela FM” and “Capricorn FM”.
In 2025, it continues to put Kharishma in the spotlight and even earns her nominations.
While it seems like it is the only song that is receiving nominations, it is undeniable that Kharishma produces hit songs because a lot of her songs have gone viral this year, such as “Wa Inama” and “Fly High Lekompo.”
In addition, Kharishma is nominated alongside the industry’s heavyweights such as Makhadzi, Mawhoo and DJ Maphorisa under the category of Music Video Of The Year.
For the Record Of The Year, she is nominated alongside Dlala Thukzin, Tyler ICU, Kelvin Momo and Kabza De Small.
Furthermore, this year’s Samas will adopt a hybrid format, blending live and digital elements according to a statement released by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) on Thursday, November 6.
The organisation revealed that they are faced with funding challenges, hence they are embracing the new hybrid concept.
The 31st annual Samas will take place on Sunday, December 14, in Johannesburg.
