Master of Monaco: Flawless Kimi Antonelli makes it five from five as Leclerc crashes out

Kimi Antonelli continued his perfect form with another pole to podium victory in Monaco on Sunday. While Antonelli kept his rhythm at the front of the field, his Mercedes predecessor Lewis Hamilton found himself back on the podium in red as Ferrari enjoyed one of their strongest weekends of the season.

The Monaco GP is rarely straightforward and this year’s race delivered chaos from start to finish. A stalled Max Verstappen was out of contention almost immediately, while multiple incidents throughout the afternoon triggered safety cars, retirements and eventually a red flag that transformed the complexion of the race.

Charles Leclerc’s late crash brought the field to a halt and set up a tense standing restart around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. It was exactly the sort of race where a championship leader can lose everything. Instead, Antonelli somehow emerged stronger.

The Mercedes driver had already done the hard work on Saturday by securing pole position, but Sunday required a different set of skills. Monaco rewards precision and punishes hesitation, and the 19-year-old was forced to navigate changing race conditions, strategic uncertainty and repeated interruptions without losing control of the race.

There will inevitably be those who point to luck. Verstappen’s retirement removed one of the biggest threats to victory, while Leclerc’s crash eliminated another potential challenger. Yet reducing Antonelli’s win to fortune ignores the reality of what unfolded.

The Italian still had to keep his car out of the barriers while others found trouble. He still had to manage restarts, tyre temperatures and race pace under immense pressure. Most importantly, he never put himself in a position where luck needed to rescue him.

Championship-winning drivers have a knack for being on the right side of chaos. Whether that comes from instinct, judgement or sheer composure, Antonelli is beginning to display all three.

That is perhaps the most impressive aspect of his current run. Five consecutive victories suggest dominance, but Monaco highlighted maturity. The teenager did not win because he was dramatically faster than everyone else. He won because he made fewer mistakes than anyone around him.

Meanwhile, Hamilton’s second-place finish offered a reminder of his enduring quality. Ferrari’s season has been inconsistent, but the seven-time world champion looked comfortable throughout the weekend and finally converted competitive pace into a result.

With Leclerc crashing out, Hamilton carried the Scuderia’s hopes and delivered their best finish in weeks. The championship picture is still far from settled, but Antonelli continues to make it look increasingly one-sided.

Five wins from five races. Pole position. Another flawless afternoon in one of Formula One’s most demanding environments. Whether it was skill, luck or a combination of both, Antonelli once again found himself standing on the top step of the podium. At this stage of the season, that is becoming a familiar sight.
