Calls continue for President Ramaphosa to hold off signing NHI Bill into law just yet
There’s more calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to hold off from signing the National Health Insurance Bill into law just yet. This time Business Unity South Africa is urging the president to send the NHI bill back to parliament for re-evaluation and amendments saying it could spell disaster for the country’s health system in its current form. The bill has also been sharply criticised by doctors, health facility providers, and health insurance companies. Business Unity however says that the bill in its current form, if passed into law could result in a mass exodus of doctors from South Africa.
Taxi thuggery blocking residents in KZN and Gauteng from commuting in e-hailing vehicles
Residents in KZN are having difficulty in commuting with e-hailing services as taxi operators are preventing passengers from boarding e-hailing vehicles. Incidents have also been reported in Gauteng with some commuters even claiming that taxi operators are even preventing them from using carpools or lift clubs.
National Treasury investigates corruption at the Independent Development Trust
Investigations are underway into the Independent Development Trust. The probe which is headed up by the National Treasury is to look into the Trust which is a state-owned entity that manages the implementation and delivery of social infrastructure programmes on behalf of government. The investigation will be around corruption, maladministration and financial management.

This comes as South Africans gear up for the national and provincial elections this year. At least 350 political parties and several independent candidates are registered with the IEC.
