When the first season of the romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This” burst onto our screens, it was so exciting. It made me believe in fairytale endings.
Fast forward to season 2, which dropped on Netflix recently. I was hoping for a continuation of the story surrounding the charming couple, rabbi Noah (Adam Brody) and his girlfriend, Joanne (Kristen Bell); however, as the season unfolded, it seemed that it had hit a stumbling block, leaving me a little disappointed.
This season finds rabbi Noah facing challenges that feel familiar but not quite as engaging as last season.
Noah is dealing with a dilemma in his professional and personal life as he faces competition from another rabbi with the same name, all because Joanne thought that the topic of converting to Judaism was off the table.
This comes up at the couple’s first dinner party, where everyone invited has issues of their own. Anyway, this creates major tension between the two of them.
In contrast to the first season, where the couple seemed to beat the odds of religion and differences, this instalment portrays them as increasingly confused and uncertain.
Meanwhile, Joanne’s sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe), feeling a little envious towards Joanne and Noah’s love, makes an impulsive decision to pursue a relationship with her therapist, Dr Andy (Arian Moayed) – not the smartest move because he knows exactly how to navigate her insecurities.
She eventually breaks up with him at their extravagant engagement party. Everyone else ends up parting ways at the party, too.

One redeeming thing about season two is the expanded role of Esther (Jackie Tohn).
Initially jealous of Sacha (Timothy Simons) and Morgan’s friendship, she ultimately seeks the space to rediscover herself away from Sacha.
We also get a closer look at Joanne and Morgan’s parents, who are given their own arcs, with Lynn even experiencing a religious awakening.

This season, every episode presents the couple with some kind of difficulty, which is solved by the end of the 30 minutes with an honest chat and a romantic hug, leaving little room for the deeper exploration of complex feelings that I was hoping to see.
With a third season on the horizon, I will likely tune in once again, because despite the disappointments, the hopeful romantic in me can’t help but root for love to triumph over the pressures of religion.
Rating: *** solid and enjoyable, though not groundbreaking.
