More than 70 local writers are set to take over the Helderberg region this August for the highly anticipated return of the 2026 Indie Authors Rise Up Book Festival.
Taking place from August 14 to August 23 across Somerset West and Strand, the festival features 26 distinct events hosted across local wineries, libraries, and cafes.
Now in its fourth year, the festival was inspired by the innovative spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has evolved from the Fringe Fireside Chats of 2023, focusing on open access for writers to connect directly with their readers.
Among the participants is June Mthimkulu. She is a domestic worker who became a published cookbook author. Her story highlights the commitment of the festival to provide a platform for self-published writers.
“We are the only open-access festival for self-published authors, and this year’s unique format allows any writer to build an audience and launch their events, making it an inviting space for creatives from all walks of life,” festival organisers said.
This year’s program is marked by rich personal storytelling and local experiences. Notable events include Gloria Arendz hosting a solo memoir session at Morgenster Estate, while the Helderberg Village Word Birds will unveil a collaborative book.
Additionally, there will be dedicated panels featuring the inspiring stories of authors in their 70s and 80s who continue to make significant contributions to the literary scene in South Africa.
While local talent shines, established writers will also be in attendance, including Cathy Donald, a multi-published author and European award winner, and Shiloh Noone, who will lead an engaging discussion on themes of ghosts and folklore.
Festival genres will encompass a wide array, from science fiction panels at Flagstone Winery to discussions on academic self-publishing at Imibala Café, which also features a dedicated panel for Christian authors hosted by Sister K Publishers.
