A suspect has been arrested following a dramatic high-speed chase through Sandton after an attempted armed robbery near a hotel in the Bramley policing precinct on Thursday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili says members of the Highway Patrol received information about a white Toyota Corolla allegedly involved in an attempted robbery of a guest at around 2pm.
“Highway Patrol received information about a vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla, allegedly involved in an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton,” Muridili said.
Authorities, working alongside Johannesburg Metro Police and private security, launched a coordinated operation to track down the suspects. The vehicle was soon spotted on Katherine Street with three occupants inside.
Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to comply, triggering a pursuit.
“The police attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped off and a chase ensued,” Muridili said.
During the chase, two of the suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot, evading arrest. Officers continued pursuing the remaining suspect, whose escape attempt was cut short when the vehicle collided with a truck.
“The driver of the vehicle got out and tried to run but the police gave chase and caught him a few meters from the scene,” Muridiliconfirmed.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two unlicensed firearms, ammunition and gloves. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton earlier this year.
“The team also discovered that the vehicle has been cloned and it was hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026,” Muridili said.
The arrested suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Police have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who managed to flee the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
