Japan’s Toshiba Brave Lupus will welcome Sharks fullback Aphelele Fassi to their ranks at the conclusion of his Bok duties later this year, and the sabbatical forms part of his recently renewed contract with the Sharks, ensuring his return to Durban in July 2027.
The 28-year-old has been a mainstay at Kings Park since 2018, having climbed through the Sharks’ junior ranks into the Springbok No 15 jersey.
Fassi was playing for Dale College at the Kearnsey Easter Festival in 2017 when the Sharks Academy spotted him, and he joined the Sharks immediately after he had matriculated.
Fassi joins a Brave Lupus side renowned for its passionate fanbase in Tokyo and experienced squad that includes All Blacks Richie Mo’unga, Shannon Frizell, and David Havili. The team is coached by former All Black captain Todd Blackadder.
“This is a unique opportunity to experience a new culture, embrace a different way of life, and challenge myself both on and off the field,” Fassi commented. “The best experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone, and I’m looking forward to immersing myself in everything that Japan has to offer.”
“Toshiba is a club with a proud history and passionate supporters, and hopefully I can give the fans plenty to cheer about. Their passion is a huge part of what makes rugby so special.
“On the field, my focus is simple: to work hard every day, contribute to the team’s success in any way I can, and help the club compete for championships. I look forward to learning from my teammates and coaches along the way.”
The Sharks have thrown their full support behind the move, noting that the opportunity will allow the homegrown star to experience a new rugby environment and continue his growth before heading back to South Africa for the 2027 local season.
“This is a fantastic milestone for Aphelele as he enters the prime of his career,” said Matt Norton of Fassi’s agency, Roc Nation Sports International. “Aligning this Japanese sabbatical with his long-term future at the Sharks gives him a platform to test himself in a world-class environment, experience a new culture, and return to South Africa a more complete player.”
